Diazepam

Action

Diazepam is Pre anesthetic, Prototype drug among benzodiazepines which act in brain on specific receptors enhancing GABAergic transmission

Diazepam binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the Central Nervous System. This binding leads to changes in some functions of the CNS like hypnosis, memory, anxiety, epilepsy, etc.

Dose

  • Dogs: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg PO IM SC IV
  • Cats: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg  PO IM SC IV
  • Sheep: 0.5 mg/kg  Slow IV
  • Goats: 0.5 mg/kg  Slow IV
  • Cattle: 0.5 mg/kg  Slow IV
  • Horse: 0.04 – 2 mg/kg  Slow IV or IM
  • Pig: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg  IM IV
  • Birds: 0.1 to 1 mg/kg IM IV

  • Muscle relaxant
  • Anxiolytic
  • Hypnotic
  • Control of seizures
  • Appetite stimulant action in cats
  • Anticonvulsant
  • Short term management of feather pluckin in birds

Contraindications

  • CNS excitement in dogs
  • Depression in cats 
  • Careful use in horse
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Patient with hepatic disorders
  • Pregnant animal
