Diazepam
Action
Diazepam is Pre anesthetic, Prototype drug among benzodiazepines which act in brain on specific receptors enhancing GABAergic transmission
Diazepam binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the Central Nervous System. This binding leads to changes in some functions of the CNS like hypnosis, memory, anxiety, epilepsy, etc.
Dose
- Dogs: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg PO IM SC IV
- Cats: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg PO IM SC IV
- Sheep: 0.5 mg/kg Slow IV
- Goats: 0.5 mg/kg Slow IV
- Cattle: 0.5 mg/kg Slow IV
- Horse: 0.04 – 2 mg/kg Slow IV or IM
- Pig: 0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg IM IV
- Birds: 0.1 to 1 mg/kg IM IV

- Muscle relaxant
- Anxiolytic
- Hypnotic
- Control of seizures
- Appetite stimulant action in cats
- Anticonvulsant
- Short term management of feather pluckin in birds
Contraindications
- CNS excitement in dogs
- Depression in cats
- Careful use in horse
- Thrombophlebitis
- Patient with hepatic disorders
- Pregnant animal
